Essential Trip Information
Is this the tour for you?
- This journey is best suited for adventurous souls aged 18–45 with a moderate fitness level.
- October in North India offers pleasant weather, with warm days and cooler evenings, especially in the mountains. However, daytime temperatures in the plains can still get quite hot, and the sun can be strong at higher altitudes. Please consider your suitability to the time of year you wish to travel and ensure you use adequate sun protection, drink plenty of water, and stay hydrated throughout the trip.
- Before taking to the skies, you will be required to complete ground training which involves running to launch the glider. You must be able to run short distances on uneven terrain while wearing gear.
- If you’re uneasy with heights or prefer to avoid more intense physical elements, we can often offer alternatives—like skipping certain solo flights or moderate trekking sections. Let us know ahead of time so we can accommodate you with care.
- The Triund hike in Himachal Pradesh may include rough, rocky, or steep sections. While distances are moderate, the altitude and terrain can make them more challenging. If you are not able to complete certain walks, alternative arrangements may be made where possible.
- This itinerary includes scenic but winding mountain roads, which may cause motion sickness for some travellers. If you are prone to travel sickness, speak to your doctor about suitable medication before your trip.

Itinerary Changers
Our ‘Wings of the Himalayas’ itinerary is updated regularly throughout the year based on customer feedback and to reflect the current situation in each destination. The information included in this Essential Trip Information may therefore differ from when you first booked your trip. It’s important that you review this information prior to travel so that you have the latest updates. Due to weather, local conditions, transport schedules, public holidays, political unrest, or other factors, further changes may be necessary to your itinerary once in-country. Your group leader or local representative will keep you up to date with any such changes once your trip is underway and has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the trip itinerary if deemed necessary due to safety concerns.
Optional Activities
A selection of optional activities that have been popular with past travelers are listed in the day-to-day itinerary. This isn’t an exhaustive list and should be used as a guide only for some of what might be available. Prices are approximate, are for entrance fees only, and don’t include transport to and from the sites or local guides unless indicated. All activities are subject to availability, and may be on a join-in basis. It may not be possible to do all the activities listed in the time available at each destination, so some pre-planning for what you are most interested in is advised. When it’s recommended that travelers pre-book these activities, look for a note in the Special Information section of the day-to-day itinerary. For most, they can either be organized independently on the day, or let your group leader or local representative know you are interested at the Welcome Meeting and they can assist.
The paragliding training and Triund ridge trek are integral parts of the tour. The trip’s physical rating is 4/5, and the group is led by a Native-Experience Tour Leader. Where activities are considered medium or high risk, we work with operators whose safety and credentials we have sighted and assessed. Although it is possible that you may find the same activity cheaper with another operator on the ground, we cannot vouch for the safety or quality of that operator. Medium and high-risk activities not listed above have not been assessed by us and as such our staff and group leader or local representative are unable to assist you with organizing these activities. Activities that contravene our Responsible Travel policies are also not listed. Please remember that the decision to partake in any activity not listed is at your own discretion and risk.
Your journey with us doesn’t end when you return home. We are eager to hear about your ‘Wings of the Himalayas’ adventure. You will be sent a link for your valuable feedback at the end of your tour. Your feedback is a vital part of our process. We carefully review every comment to understand what made your experience truly memorable and how we can refine our expeditions for future explorers. Your insights help us to continuously improve and ensure the quality of our trips.

- Some travelers have reported being approached by local guides offering adventure activities and tours. These guides are in no way connected to Native-Experience, and we cannot guarantee the safety or quality standards of their services. We strongly advise against participating in any tours offered by unauthorized guides or operators.
- A single supplement is available if you would prefer not to share a room on this trip and is subject to availability. Please speak to us for further information.
- The ‘Wings of the Himalayas’ itinerary is highly dependent on weather and local conditions. Due to factors such as weather changes, transport schedules, or public holidays, it may be necessary to alter the paragliding or trekking schedule for safety reasons. Your group leader will keep you updated on any such changes.
- For the Triund Ridge trek, a valid government-issued ID is required for a forest checkpoint registration. Please ensure you have your ID (such as a passport) with you.
- Paragliding is a weather-dependent activity. In the event of unsuitable wind or weather conditions, the flight may be postponed or canceled. Our pilots are certified and adhere to strict safety protocols, and their decision is final.
- The ‘Wings of the Himalayas’ trip has a physical rating of 4/5. Participants should be in good physical condition for the trek and paragliding activities. Please consult with your doctor and carry any necessary personal medication to prepare for high-altitude environments and physical exertion.
Passport
You’ll need a valid passport to travel internationally, and it is a requirement that your passport has a minimum of 6 months validity from your date of arrival in India. Please remember to check the expiry date.
We need your passport information to get everything ready for your trip, so it’s important that the information on your booking matches your passport exactly. Please take care to provide the correct details. We recommend carrying a copy of the photo page of your passport while traveling and leaving a copy at home with family or friends. A physical copy or a photo on your phone is also useful for check-ins at hotels and forest checkpoints during the trek.
Visa & Entry Requirements
Many nationalities are eligible for an Indian e-Visa, which is the most convenient way to obtain a visa for tourism purposes. The application process is online, and it is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct visa for your trip and any countries you may transit through. We recommend you check your visa requirements as soon as you have booked your trip to allow ample time for the application to be processed.
Information Required for Trip Bookings & Permits
For this adventure, your passport details will be required for internal logistics and for checkpoint registrations during the trek and other activities in Himachal Pradesh. Please ensure you provide us with your full name and passport number exactly as it appears on your passport at the time of booking.
General health
All travelers need to be in good physical health to participate fully in this trip. Given the nature of the ‘Wings of the Himalayas’ tour, which includes paragliding and high-altitude trekking, it is essential that you have the physical ability to manage the itinerary. For the safety and well-being of yourself and others, if you are unwell prior to traveling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements.
You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information or any necessary vaccinations before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements in their original packaging, as they may not be easily obtained while traveling. If you are carrying medication, ensure you check your government’s foreign travel advice for any local restrictions or requirements.
Altitude and other health considerations
This trip involves trekking in the Himalayas, which can lead to altitude sickness (2,850 meters /9,350 feet above sea level) . Symptoms can include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath. To help prevent this, it is crucial to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity on the first few days, and acclimatize properly. Please be sure to inform your group leader immediately if you experience any symptoms.
A highlight of traveling in India is the incredible food. While most meals will be vegetarian or vegan, there are a wide variety of delicious and authentic options available. A key health consideration, however, is food and water hygiene. To avoid stomach upsets, we highly recommend drinking only bottled or purified water and being cautious with street food. It’s best to stick to meals that have been recently cooked and served hot.
There will be two included meals (dinners) for this tour. During your time in Bir and Dharamshala, you’ll find a wide variety of food options, from bustling street stalls to quiet, sit-down restaurants. However, during the camping night on the Triund trail, food options will be limited, so it’s a good idea to bring a few of your own snacks.
Guesthouses /Homestay (9 nights), Camping (1 night)
Occasional Alternative Accommodation
The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline. On rare occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to a lack of room availability in our usual accommodation. A similar standard of accommodation will be used in these instances.
Shared Accommodation
Accommodation on this trip is on a shared basis with travelers of the same gender. Please note there may be times where facilities will be shared rather than ensuite.
Check-in Time
Throughout the trip, we request that our accommodations prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we’re arriving prior to the normal check-in time. However, this isn’t always possible, which means we won’t be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some guesthouses. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination.
Pre/Post Trip Accommodation
If you’ve purchased pre-trip or post-trip accommodation (subject to availability), you may be required to change rooms from your trip accommodation for these extra nights.
Facilities
Accommodation will be in basic guesthouses/ homestay and tent. Please note that while all accommodations will have hot water, they may not equipped with air-conditioning. The camping is a basic and simple experience, and you will be provided with a shared tent and an individual sleeping bag.
Private vehicle, Overnight bus, Auto-rickshaw, Tuk-tuk
MOTORCYCLES
Your travel insurance policy is unlikely to cover you when riding a motorcycle. We do not include or offer motorcycle activities on this trip.
TAXIS
Taxis can be booked locally for local travel or onward journeys from Dharamshala. Your Native Experience team can also assist with pre-booking a departure transfer via taxi.
Financial Planning for Your Trip
To make the most of your adventure, it’s a good idea to plan your spending. Your personal budget will depend on your habits, so consider things like drinks, souvenirs, and any optional activities not included in your itinerary. Be sure to review your trip inclusions to understand what you’ve already paid for.
The official currency in India is the Indian Rupee (INR). ATMs are widely available in cities like Delhi and Dharamshala, and credit/debit cards are accepted at larger establishments. However, cash is king, especially for smaller purchases, local markets, and in more rural areas.
We suggest budgeting around $200 USD for meals and other personal expenses not covered by the tour.
Tipping and Gratuities
Tipping is a common practice in India’s tourism industry and is a meaningful way to show appreciation for excellent service. A good rule of thumb is to avoid tipping with small coins or dirty, torn notes, as this can be considered disrespectful.
Your group leader may suggest an optional group tipping kitty on the first day. Everyone would contribute an equal amount, and your leader would manage tips for drivers, local guides, and hotel staff. Participating is completely your choice; you can always handle your own tips separately. If you do join, the suggested contribution for this trip is INR 2,000 – 3,500 per person. This kitty does not include a tip for your group leader.
When it comes to your group leader, tipping is entirely at your discretion based on the quality of their service. A common guideline is $3-6 USD per traveler per day, but feel free to adjust this based on your experience.
Emergency Funds
While we plan for a smooth journey, unforeseen events can happen. It’s wise to have access to a contingency fund of approximately $500 USD to cover unexpected costs from things like severe weather, transport strikes, or itinerary changes. While the recommended amount is in USD for universal convenience, you may need local currency to cover these costs while in the country.Packing smart is key for a comfortable journey. We recommend keeping your luggage to a minimum. A small, soft-sided bag or backpack (no more than 15-20kg in total) is ideal, as it’s much easier to manage on the overnight bus and during the trek you will be only taking the essentials to last for your camping day and for the following moring. You’ll also need a day pack to carry daily essentials like water, a camera, and an extra layer.
Below is a detailed list of what to pack for this trip, keeping in mind the variable climate of the Himalayas and the trekking component.
Essential Gear
- Layered Clothing: The weather in the mountains can change quickly. It’s best to dress in layers. Pack a mix of lightweight, moisture-wicking clothes for the day and warm layers for chilly evenings and the overnight camp. For visiting temples, remember to pack clothes that cover your shoulders and knees.
- Sturdy Footwear: This is a top priority. A pair of well-worn, sturdy hiking boots with good grip is essential for the trek and ideally running shoes for the pragliding training. They will protect your feet and provide ankle support on uneven terrain. Also, pack a comfortable pair of shoes or sandals for use in towns and at the guesthouses.
- Sun Protection: At high altitudes, the sun is strong. A hat, sunglasses, and a high-SPF sunscreen are a must.
- Personal Medical Kit: Your leader will have a larger first-aid kit, but it’s smart to carry a small personal one. Include essentials like mild pain relievers, bandages, electrolytes, and insect repellent.
- Reusable Water Bottle: We highly recommend a 1.5-liter reusable water bottle to help reduce plastic waste.
Recommended Items
- Warm and Waterproof Jacket: Even in October, temperatures can drop significantly, especially on the Triund trail while any morning solo flights. A warm, waterproof jacket will protect you from both cold and unexpected rain.
- Trekking Gear: Consider bringing a fleece, warm mid-layer, and long trekking pants. Avoid jeans, as they are uncomfortable for hiking and take a long time to dry.
- Running Shoes: Ideal shoes would be light running shoes for paragliding ground training.
- Snacks: Having your own energy-boosting snacks like nuts or energy bars is a great idea for the trek as well as during pragliding ground traning.
- Camera/Phone: The scenery is spectacular, and you’ll want to capture it.
- Small Flashlight or Headlamp: This is very useful for getting around camp at night and for the overnight stay on the trail.
For Your Luggage
- Luggage Limit: A small, soft-sided bag and your day pack should be all you need. We advise against hard-shell suitcases, as they can be difficult to store in vehicles.
- Valuables: Use a money belt or a hidden pouch to keep your valuables secure. It’s also a good idea to photocopy your essential documents like your passport, and keep the copies separate from the originals. This will make it much easier to replace them if needed.
- Batteries and Power: Power outlets will be available at most guesthouses. However, since you’ll be camping, an extra camera battery or a small portable power bank is highly recommended to keep your devices charged.
While hotels and guesthouses in major towns like Delhi, Bir, and Dharamshala generally have Wi-Fi, it can be slow or unreliable at times. In more remote areas and particularly on the Triund trek, access will be limited or non-existent. For reliable connectivity, we recommend purchasing a local Indian SIM card upon arrival at the airport. You can get plans that offer excellent data coverage across the country from major providers such as Airtel or Jio. Your trip leader will be able to provide the best advice on the ground for staying connected.
Himalayan Weather
The “Wings of the Himalayas” tour takes place in October, which is one of the best times to visit the region. The monsoon season has ended, leaving clear skies and spectacular views of the mountains. Days are generally pleasant, with mild temperatures, making them perfect for trekking and paragliding. However, evenings and nights can be quite cold, especially at higher altitudes on the Triund trail. Be prepared for temperature drops and pack accordingly with warm layers.
Major Festivals
This region of India is rich in culture and you may be traveling during a major festival. Your trip may overlap with local celebrations like Dussehra, a vibrant festival that takes place in October. While these festivals offer a unique cultural experience, they can also lead to increased crowds and some local businesses or services being closed. Your tour leader will keep you informed of any potential impacts on the itinerary.
Our group leaders are experienced representatives whose main goal is to ensure you have a hassle-free and unforgettable trip. They are responsible for handling logistics, providing information on the places you’re visiting, and offering suggestions for activities and local eateries. They have a broad general knowledge of the region, including its culture, and traditions. Our leaders are passionate about what they do and are there to make sure you get the most out of your Himalayan adventure.
General Safety Guidelines
Your safety is our top priority. Before your trip, we strongly recommend checking the latest travel advisories from your government for India. It is also crucial that your travel insurance policy provides adequate coverage for all activities, including trekking and paragliding. Throughout the journey, always maintain awareness of your surroundings. Keep valuables like your passport, phone, and cash in a secure place, such as a money belt or a hidden pouch. When in hotels, utilize the safe deposit box for storing any items you don’t need for the day.
Local Conditions and Customs
Be prepared for the dynamic environment of the Himalayas. While this is a generally safe region, road conditions can be unpredictable, with occasional delays due to weather or natural events like landslides. Your trip leader is expertly trained to navigate these situations and will keep you informed. It is a legal requirement to carry some form of official photo identification, so we advise you to have a copy of your passport with you at all times. Please be mindful of and respect local laws and cultural customs, including public behavior and dress codes.
Staying Safe on the Ground
In urban areas and crowded spots like markets, be vigilant against petty theft. Secure your belongings and avoid leaving personal items unattended. When it comes to street vendors, taxis, or local services, your group leader can offer valuable advice to help you avoid common scams. For solo excursions or late-night travel, it is always a good practice to be cautious, especially in less-lit or unfamiliar areas.
Women’s Safety
Women should exercise caution when traveling in India. While the risk of an incident is low, taking simple precautions can provide peace of mind. It is a good idea to respect local dress codes and customs by dressing more conservatively than you might at home. Avoid isolated areas, unlit streets, and village lanes when alone, and avoid traveling alone at night on public transport or in taxis.
A Note for All Travelers
Our trips are welcoming to everyone, but it is important to remember that social norms and cultural acceptance can differ from what you are used to. We encourage all travelers to be respectful of local customs and traditions. Your group leader is available to offer support and guidance should you have any questions or concerns regarding social interactions.
At Native-Experience, we believe a positive and respectful environment is essential for an incredible adventure. We have a zero-tolerance policy for any form of violence, harassment (physical, verbal, or sexual), or disrespect towards fellow travelers, our team, or the local communities we visit.
To ensure the safety and well-being of everyone on the trip, decisions made by your group leader are final. Your leader’s authority is in place to manage unforeseen circumstances and maintain the flow of the itinerary.
Any behavior that disrupts the planned itinerary, violates local laws, or goes against these guidelines may result in your immediate removal from the trip without a refund.
If you have any concerns during your travels, we urge you to speak with your group leader immediately. If a situation requires it, you can also use the emergency contact number provided in your trip documents.
Group Travel
Traveling with a group is a rewarding way to explore the world, and your fellow travelers will likely come from various backgrounds and ages. We ask that you approach your trip with an open mind and a spirit of understanding. Patience with your fellow travelers is sometimes necessary for the benefit of everyone’s experience.
Remember that you are a key part of the group’s success. Please be punctual and considerate of others by showing up on time for all scheduled activities. We’ve found that the best trips are those where the group dynamic works well, and a little effort from everyone goes a long way.
Solo Travelers
Our accommodations are organized on a share basis. We pair solo travelers with other travelers of the same gender as indicated on their passport. If you prefer to have your own room, a single supplement is available with an additional cost, subject to availability. This applies to your accommodation during the tour. If you book pre-trip or post-trip accommodation through us, it will always be on a single-room basis.
LGBTQIA+ Travelers
We are committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all travelers. If your gender identity differs from the gender marker on your passport, please contact us so we can discuss and arrange suitable rooming options with you to ensure your comfort and privacy throughout the trip.
While travel insurance is not a compulsory requirement for this trip, we strongly recommend that you purchase a comprehensive policy that covers all aspects of your journey. Your policy should include coverage for unforeseen circumstances such as flight cancellations, lost luggage, and medical emergencies.
It is particularly important that your insurance covers adventure activities like trekking and paragliding. Please review the policy details carefully to ensure you are fully protected for these activities. Native-Experience will not be held responsible for any expenses incurred as a result of an injury, accident, or other unforeseen event.
Our journey through the Himalayas is designed to be a deeply authentic experience, and we believe that a truly great adventure leaves a lasting positive impact. We ask that you join us in a commitment to responsible travel by being mindful of your footprint, engaging respectfully with local communities, and protecting the beautiful environment we’ll be exploring.
Showing respect for the local culture is key to a meaningful trip. When visiting monasteries or other sacred sites, please dress modestly—this means covering your shoulders and knees. Remember that these are active spiritual centers; be aware of your surroundings, and avoid posing for photos in a way that is disrespectful to religious figures, such as turning your back to a statue of the Buddha. Always ask for permission before taking pictures of local people.
The stunning mountain trails we’ll be hiking are a shared natural resource. Please help us keep them pristine by practicing a leave-no-trace philosophy. We will also encounter a variety of wildlife and working animals along the way. We ask that you admire the wildlife from a safe and respectful distance. When you see mules or horses on the trail, please be patient and give them space. They are essential to the livelihoods of the local people and deserve to be treated with kindness.
